Marketing and Branding - Lessons from the Queen, I Want it All!

I was recently visiting my personal history and was on one of my favorite all time albums, Jazz, Queen. It contained the hits "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race" and also contained a very risque posters of girls and bicycles. If you are unfamiliar with the queen, the group consisted of four members, the most famous was the openly gay lead singer Freddy Mercury.

The reason we call sexual orientation is because Freddy had a relationship with the image and reputation of gangs and their repertoire. Although many gay songs and graphics have been marketed for the heterosexual community. Why is this? It is basically marketing.

They were well aware of the power of marketing and the strength of their image. So Freddy Mercury singing of "Fat Bottomed Girl" take it home, although in most circumstances that probably would not have been his preference. Their albums with many Jazz songs was a striking indication of their versatility, but most of the songs were not the rock anthems were best known for. The songs, however, climb the charts, despite this fact.

Later in their career, and in fact, after the untimely deaths of Mercury, perhaps one of their best known songs, Bohemian Rhapsody topped the charts again, when it was featured in the movie "Wayne's World" starring Mike Meyers. The song was released as a single after the film was awarded.

The power of music and the marketing savvy of the band and their management in Regina, one of the best selling and most popular bands of all time. There greatest hits album is the biggest selling album of all time in Britain (beating the Beatles) and have sold over 300 million albums.

This is a strong testament to their marketing strategy and their legacy, the band continues to sell records years after they have been together. The main marketing message of this is to point your material for your market and not for your personal beliefs about what people will buy. At the end of the queen's legacy is the music, but the targeted strategy is what has made them legendary .......
